ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

In April 2022, UN Environment launched the 2022 World Environment Day campaign with the spotlight on three major issues we are facing today: climate change, biodiversity and pollution, “encouraging everyone, everywhere to live sustainably”.

Our campaign as a platform to act

At Nordic Ocean Watch Denmark, we strive to strengthen the public focus on the extent of ocean pollution and its consequences and be part of a future where marine pollution is reduced through the actions of the individual as well as volunteer initiatives. The #CleanSummerNOW campaign, launched for the first time in 2022 aims to do exactly that: encourage everyone to do their bit to reduce pollution in their nearby coast, river, park or harbour, forest, lake or stream.

What, where, how

There are a few things you should do before your big day. We’re here to help with some ideas for your next cleanup!

  1. Gather your friends and family

  2. Decide where you want to go and what time

  3. Gather some materials to help your cleanup:

    • Trash bags (ideally biodegradable)

    • Ideally reusable gloves

    • (If available) litter pickers

    • Feel free to download our Trash Bingo card to turn your cleanup into a trash hunting game!

  4. Get to your chosen location

  5. Enjoy a fun day in nature and help it stay clean!

Get in touch!

Let us and the world know about your cleanup action and how many kg of waste you collected by posting a photo or a video of you in action using #CleanSummerNOW and tag us @nordicoceanwatchdenmark to reach and inspire like-minded ocean-lovers.(information adapted from Nordic Ocean Watch Denmark Cleanup Guide)

Disposing waste

Consider combining your trash hunt with some #citizenscience! Once you’re done with your cleanup, sort your waste into different categories, e.g. plastic, paper, cardboard, rope, metal, glass, textile, etc., and dispose of them properly in recycling bins. Any dirty objects are considered general waste.

Safety

Always be aware of what you pick up. If you see any sharp objects, do not touch them with your hands. Your safety is most important - so you can keep doing good for the world!
