TRASH DATA

our trash data database

Why do we collect Trash Data ?

At Nordic Ocean Watch Denmark we sort and weigh the trash we collect at our cleanup events for our own Trash Data Database. Following our cleanups, the collected trash is sorted into predefined categories and weighed.

We collect data of the type and amount of trash and where it is found. Trash Data is analysed continuously, to identify interesting and relevant trends, and for further analysis and dissemination. We believe it is an important way to prevent more trash from entering the ocean.

How do we sort the trash ?

The trash is sorted into predefined categories designed by our biologists. Sorting by waste categories cannot be 100% accurate every time, as sorting is largely based on the appearance and physical properties of the individual object, rather than its chemical composition, as the latter is not possible to examine on site.

We compile a chart showing the percentage distribution of the waste in the predefined categories. The chart is shared on social media after the cleanup to form a clear overview of the distribution of the trash that we found. Below you find a chart from our cleanup event at World Cleanup Day 2020.
